Doctoral programs in the field of health research (or joint master/doctorate or medical doctor/doctorate); natural sciences and/or engineering research; and social sciences and/or humanities research
An eligible doctoral program must include an important research component that leads to the completion of a dissertation, major research project, thesis, academic publication, performance, solo and/or exhibition, which at the institutional level is a merit/expert review of the required procedures carry out.

To be considered for Vanier CGS, you must:
- Nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must obtain Vanier CGS quota;
- Are pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/postgraduate research projects such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/PhD-if it has a proven and important research component). Please note that only the doctoral part of a joint degree is eligible for funding;
- Plan to study a full-time doctoral (or joint graduate program, such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/PhD) learning and research institution in the nomination office during the summer semester or the academic year after the results are announced; please note that there are only joint degrees Only the Ph.D. part is eligible for funding;
- Completion of no more than 20 months of doctoral research by May 1, 2022
- Complete a full-time Ph.D. program of no more than 32 months before May 1, 2022,
Participated in joint graduate research programs, such as MD/Ph.D., MA/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D. Applicants in this category can use the 32-month window regardless of whether they have previously registered for a master's program; or
Accelerate directly from Bachelor to Ph.D. (no time to spend on master's courses); or
In the absence of a master's degree, accelerate from a master's degree to a doctoral program.
- Each of the past two years of full-time study or equivalent qualifications has reached a first-rate average level determined by your institution. Candidates are encouraged to contact the institution to understand its definition of the first-class average;
- Do not hold or have held a doctoral scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC to study or complete a doctorate.
Application description for Vanier Canada graduate scholarships for international students
Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution and have a quota of what they want to study. Candidates cannot directly apply for the Vanier CGS program.
The application is launched in one of two ways. Students either notify the graduate school of the chosen institution that they intend to apply for the Vanier CGS program, or the institution initiates the nomination process by contacting the required candidates.
The application is prepared by the student and submitted to the nominating agency using the ResearchNet application system before the internal deadline.
The nominating body then forwards the recommended nomination to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (Secretariat) before November 2, 2021.
