Introduction University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship
The University of Waikato international excellence scholarships are for talented international students from qualified countries to support their first entry into the University of Waikato’s undergraduate or graduate program.
Scholarships will be awarded to candidates who have outstanding academic achievements and have strong potential to become global ambassadors at the University of Waikato.

Applicants must be citizens of the following countries/regions and be classified as overseas students: United States, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Norway, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Jordan, Iran, Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mauritius.
Scholarship amount/include:
The maximum amount of the scholarship is NZD 10,000, which will be directly included in the tuition of the course chosen by the recipient upon enrollment or after enrollment.
The amount provided will be based on the following criteria, such as but not limited to the total amount of available funds, level, financial needs, number of credits, number of applicants, and time of enrollment.
Qualification required for University of Waikato scholarship
Scholarship applicants must intend to enter the University of Waikato (UoW) for the first time in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in any subject and must have received a conditional or unconditional letter of admission from UoW. The applicant's minimum GPA equivalence must be B+.
Applicants must be citizens of the following countries/regions and be classified as overseas students (see above).
They are currently not allowed to join Waikato University (including Academic English Certificate, Basic Research Certificate, International Business or Science Diploma or any other pre-degree courses) and must not have the fees paid at the time of application.
They must meet the English requirements of the University of Waikato or obtain an academic English certificate from the University of Waikato.
They should have received a conditional or unconditional offer of admission to a full-time degree program with a total duration of at least 12 months.
They must live in New Zealand to receive scholarships and can only study up to 50% of their courses online (if this option is available).
Students who enter the University of Waikato through a guarantee agency, and students who enter the University of Waikato through a guaranteed credit arrangement, study abroad, or a student exchange agreement, are not eligible.
Application instructions:
Applications in 2021 can be submitted at any time for the University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship, but the applicant must be abroad when submitting the scholarship application and must submit the scholarship application before submitting the visa application to travel to New Zealand.
They need to provide a personal statement to answer the following questions:
- What are your career goals/ambitions?
- How will international education experience help you achieve these goals?
- What other qualities/skills do you possess that make you an ideal candidate for this scholarship and an ambassador for Waikato University?
